How to Search the Ontonagon County Court Docket
Start with MiCOURT Case Search. It is Michigan's statewide case-history locator for the public. It is not a certified record or an Ontonagon County filing-image archive. Use the exact case number when you have it. No number? Search by a party or business name instead. Then narrow the results by case category, status, or a date range. Before any request goes out, the result should identify the court of record.
For an Ontonagon County search, keep the party name, the rough filing year, and the court lane together. The 98-2 District Court, the 32nd Circuit Court, and Ontonagon Probate Court handle different kinds of matters. A result may list a next hearing, a status, a balance, the parties, or an event history. Need a current setting, a paper record, or an official copy? The court office itself is still the source.
The official MiCOURT search landing shows the public interface and its access notice.
That public search helps you locate eligible Ontonagon County case history. It does not promise that every filing image is available online.
- Open MiCOURT and accept the public-search terms before entering an Ontonagon County query.
- Choose Name Search or Case Number Search, then use the narrowest reliable information.
- Use category and status filters only after checking the initial Ontonagon County results.
- Read the court, case ID, status, register entries, and any next-hearing field together.
- Call the court of record to confirm a hearing or request a plain or certified copy.
Ontonagon County Court Docket Search
MiCOURT's name search requires a Last Name or Business entry. A first name, middle name, or birth year can narrow an Ontonagon County court docket search. A full date of birth is not required. The last-name field takes at least two characters, and the name fields combined need at least four. Wildcards do not work in the last-name field.
A case-number search works differently. Case Number is required there. Case Year is optional, but it must be four digits when used. Type is optional as well, with a two-character limit. The portal's example formats illustrate input rules, not a promise about the local numbering format. When a number or code looks unfamiliar, ask the court clerk to confirm it.
| Field | Use in an Ontonagon County Search | Format or Choice |
|---|---|---|
| Last Name or Business | Primary public name-search field | Required; no wildcard |
| Case Number | Best route when an Ontonagon County number is known | Required for number search |
| Status | Limits results by case stage | Open/Pending, Adjudicated/Disposed, or Closed |
| Category | Separates court lanes | Civil, Criminal/Traffic/Civil Infractions, or Probate |
| Date range | Narrows a broad Ontonagon County result set | Filed Date and, when applicable, Offense Date |
Jot down the date and criteria you used for an Ontonagon County search. Public portal results can change as cases progress.
What a Court Docket Shows
In Ontonagon County, a docket is practical shorthand for the register of actions. That is the case history the clerk keeps in chronological order. It can show that a filing was received or an event was set. It can show that a party appeared or an order was entered. Read it with care. A docket entry is not a full image file. It is not a current payoff statement. And it is not proof that an allegation was established. The case detail and the court clerk supply the context a short event label leaves out.
A MiCOURT detail screen may hold more than the basic result card. What appears varies with the case and the access rule. Court staff can say whether an Ontonagon County record is scanned, paper-only, archived, sealed, restricted, or held in another court division.
| Case ID and number | The court-assigned identifier used to locate an Ontonagon County matter. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Names and roles such as plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, or interested person. |
| Filed date | The date the case or paper was filed, which is not necessarily the hearing date. |
| Register entries | Chronological event labels, filings, orders, and other case-history references. |
| Next hearing | A scheduled event when displayed; confirm it with the relevant Ontonagon County court. |
| Disposition | The recorded outcome or procedural result, not simply the allegation or case title. |

MiCOURT finds public case history. MiFILE/TrueFiling is something else: a separate electronic filing workflow for enabled courts. That split matters in Ontonagon County. A public register entry does not mean the filed paper is downloadable. A MiFILE account does not turn the public search into a complete document repository. The current MiFILE Available Courts list includes Ontonagon 98-2 District Court and Ontonagon Probate Court. No 32nd Circuit entry appears on that list.
Need a complaint, order, judgment, certified disposition, exhibit, or historical paper file? Take the Ontonagon County clerk route. The clerk can also say whether a redacted copy is available. An absent document image is not proof that a case never existed.
Note: Confirm 32nd Circuit MiFILE coverage with the Ontonagon County clerk. Do this before relying on an e-filing route for a circuit matter.
Which Courts Keep Dockets
Ontonagon County runs three distinct state trial-court lanes. The court name on a result is the key to a useful record request. District matters generally begin at the 98-2 District Court. A felony can have a district preliminary history. Then a separate 32nd Circuit history follows after bindover. Probate is its own lane. It covers estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and related proceedings.
Shared administration does not mean every Ontonagon County office holds every file. Start with the case category and the court named in MiCOURT. When a local matter names no clear court, the county clerk or the issuing authority can identify the proper Ontonagon County destination.
| Court | Docket Covers | Where to Search or Confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 98-2 District Court | Misdemeanors, traffic, civil infractions, ordinance matters, small claims, summary proceedings, and felony preliminary work | MiCOURT, then the district office |
| 32nd Circuit Court | Felony dispositions and trials, general civil, circuit appeals, and family division matters | MiCOURT, then the county clerk/circuit route |
| Ontonagon Probate Court | Estates, trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and probate matters | MiCOURT, then the probate register |
Ontonagon County Court Docket Routing
The shared Ontonagon County courthouse is the practical in-person starting point. That is where an online result needs follow-up. The County Clerk/Register office sits on the first floor. Circuit, district, and probate offices are upstairs on the second floor. Their records routes and telephone lines differ. A good request names the court, the case number, the caption or parties, the filing year, the document, and whether a plain or certified copy is needed.
The county offices page publishes the courthouse location and general office schedule.
Call before you drive over. Ontonagon County posts no public-terminal schedule, parking guide, or security page. A quick phone check saves a wasted trip.
Know which office handles your court docket question. Circuit matters go through the County Clerk/Circuit route. District cases go through the 98-2 District Court office. Probate questions go through the Ontonagon County Probate Court register. Leading with "Ontonagon County court" helps staff tell a court-record request apart from a deed, vital-record, Friend of Court, or general county-office question.
Note: Attending a hearing and getting copies of a document are two different things. Confirm the room, the current setting, and any access conditions directly with the court.
Finding Court Dates and Settings
A court docket entry can list a next hearing. It may also show an event date and time, an action type, a courtroom, or a jurist. That is a scheduled event, not a promise it will happen as listed. The county publishes no daily or weekly judicial calendar. A county board meeting held in the circuit courtroom is civic use of the room. It is not a court calendar.
Start with the case number. Jot down the setting shown, then call the court close to the date. For the County Clerk/Circuit route, dial 906-884-4255. 98-2 District Court is 906-884-2865, and Ontonagon Probate Court is 906-884-4117. The Ontonagon County court calendar page walks through the setting fields and the confirmation sequence.
Ontonagon County Court Docket Filing
MiFILE/TrueFiling is a sign-in system for filing and processing. It is not a public Ontonagon County court docket. After logging in, a filer may see filing history, processing status, receipts, and case search. None of that replaces MiCOURT's public case-history search or a clerk's copy process.
MiFILE is available for the 98-2 District Court and Ontonagon Probate Court. A current 32nd Circuit listing is less certain. Before starting any Ontonagon County filing, confirm the court's enabled status. Lawyers, parties, and self-represented filers should also check its filing requirements and its fees.
Ontonagon County Court Docket Workload
State caseload reports give a sense of scale for an Ontonagon County court docket. They identify no person and no case. The 2021 district snapshot counted traffic and civil-infraction work. It also counted criminal and general civil filings. The 2023 circuit report tracked criminal/civil and domestic-relations work separately. These aggregates show why picking the right court lane matters. They are not a current calendar, and they cannot prove any individual case outcome.
Those figures suggest a practical Ontonagon County search habit. Lead with the identifier on your notice instead of a broad name search. The district snapshot included 207 new statute civil-infraction filings. It added 96 nontraffic civil infractions, 54 statute misdemeanors, 52 general civil filings, and 35 felony criminal filings. It is a past workload snapshot. It will not predict what a current Ontonagon County register shows. It does explain why traffic, civil, criminal, circuit, and probate case histories need careful routing.
Note: Aggregate Ontonagon County caseload reports describe court workload only. They never describe a person or an individual case result.
Public Access to Dockets
Michigan court access runs on court rules and records standards, not an ordinary FOIA request. In Ontonagon County, anyone may inspect or copy a public register of actions unless a rule or order restricts it. The clerk keeps custody of the court records. A plain copy may be charged at actual allowable reproduction cost. A certified copy carries the state-standard charge described below.
Access has limits, though. MiCOURT excludes or restricts juvenile, adoption, child-protective, mental-health, PPO, and other sensitive proceedings. Protected personal information gets redacted. A missing image can mean a restriction, sealing, a paper record, or a portal limit rather than a technical error.
Michigan court-record rules:
MCR 8.119 governs public case records, register access, copying, restricted records, and clerk custody.
MCR 1.109 addresses protected personal information and redaction in court filings.
MCL 15.232 places the judicial branch outside Michigan FOIA's public-body definition for this purpose.
MCL 600.2546 is the statutory basis for certified-copy charges.
Ontonagon County Court Docket Paths
Most local matters stay in the Ontonagon County state-court lanes. Federal civil, criminal, bankruptcy, and appellate cases are different. They never show up as an Ontonagon County court docket in MiCOURT. They live in PACER and the federal court system. The Western District of Michigan handles Upper Peninsula federal matters from its Marquette location. Its official site lists court locations and public notices.
Use that federal route only when the case truly is federal, since it sits apart from the Ontonagon County clerk. The Western District public-access notice explains electronic records and the limits on sealed documents.
Federal access limits can apply even inside PACER, much as Michigan court records can be restricted under a rule or order. Confirm which court system holds your case first.
Note: A federal case will not appear in the same public route as an Ontonagon County state case, so check the system before you search.
The Clerk and Docket Records
Haley Rasmussen is the Ontonagon County Clerk/Register of Deeds. She is the contact route for county and circuit court-record questions. Her Register of Deeds side is a land-record function. It is no substitute for an Ontonagon County court docket. District matters belong with the 98-2 District Court office; probate matters with the probate register. Ask for something precise rather than every record tied to a name.

Certified copies cost $1 per page plus a $10 certification fee under state records standards. Ontonagon County posts no plain-copy price and no general court-record request form. Ask the Ontonagon County court of record directly for the current amount and how copies are delivered.
Ontonagon County Court Docket Federal Search
Federal cases from Ontonagon County live in a separate system. PACER is the official public search tool for them. Start by making an account, which takes just a few minutes. Not sure which court heard the matter? The PACER Case Locator can point you to it. From there, open the court's CM/ECF file for the full docket. Fees apply. The published terms can change, so check PACER's fee information when you use the service.
Ontonagon County sits in the Western District. The Western District CM/ECF court-information page posts the Marquette federal details.
Two tools divide the work. CM/ECF handles filings and case management inside the federal courts, while PACER is the public's window into that same docket information. For bankruptcy, the Western District Bankruptcy page for Marquette explains which Upper Peninsula cases belong at that venue and flags an important caveat on where filings must go.
Bankruptcy is a federal matter. Nothing about it will appear in the Ontonagon County probate docket or any county court docket, so do not search there. The PACER public access page covers account setup and its case locator for tracking down the right federal filing.
PACER opens most federal court records to the public, but it has limits. Sealed or restricted documents stay off limits no matter how you search. One narrow option remains for bankruptcy: the McVCIS phone-access page describes a telephone route with basic case information.
For federal cases tied to Ontonagon County, use PACER to pull full docket details.
Court Dockets by City in Ontonagon County
The official 2020 table lists just one incorporated place in Ontonagon County. That place is the Village of Ontonagon. Note that it is a village, not a city. The village posts no separate municipal court or village docket portal. Village administrative records and state-court records travel different routes. A traffic or ordinance question should start there, with the issuing authority. If the matter sits in state court, confirm the details with the 98-2 District Court.
No city cards are needed for Ewen, Greenland, Mass City, or Rockland. Those names appear in geographic or community materials only, not as incorporated court jurisdictions. A single Village of Ontonagon entry keeps the route clear. Use the village office for municipal administration. Court work is different. A register of actions, hearing, copy, or case search belongs with the county state courts.
